Have you recently become a company director? If so, you will need to register for a self-assessment tax return with HMRC. Company directors must complete a personal tax return for each tax year (the year ending 5th April). You need to register as soon as possible after becoming a company director although the deadline for registration is the 5th October following the end of the tax year in which you became a director. For example, if you were appointed as a company director for the first time on 5th September 2016, you will need to have registered by 5th October 2017. To register online, you will need to complete this form: https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/SA1 Complete the details in the boxes provided and once completed, submit it to HMRC. Once you have registered, you will be sent your Unique Tax Reference which you will need to complete your tax return. If you need any assistance with registering as a company director and would like an accountant to act on your behalf, get in touch.
